“The Squire of Gothos” An Enterprise landing party is held hostage by the superior, yet childish being Trelane who enjoys human culture and the company of human “pets”. Kirk, however, is not amused and struggles against Trelane. He releases the rest of his hostages and accepts a challenge by Kirk. Oh I loved this one! Trelane is both amuzing and tragic for me. At first I thought he’s just some selfish egomaniac. Took me a while to realize he was just a child. Cruel and spoiled, granted, but simply a child playing with advanced toys.
There was something in Kirk’s behavior that didn’t quite work for me but I’m not sure what it was anymore. Anyway, I simply loved the ending with Trelane’s parents’ voices.
Also, it’s yet another episode dealing with super-human powers. Where’s the border? Where does a man stop being… hmm… moral? Here it seems there can be no borders. Depressing but true. Very true.
